"I would come and watch my Dad on Monday night, and one night Joy asked if I wanted to join in on all the fun."

This month's Spotlight Athletes are a father-son duo! They are high energy and impressive to watch in a workout! Kevin and Nick have fun attitudes and are in constant "friendly" competition with each other. Check out their story below!

1. Tell us about yourself

Kevin - I'm 53 years old Bald and formally fat not much more to tell... oh and a Grandfather

I can best be described as:

"I've got a beer-stained t-shirt looking like Joe Dirt
Something 'bout me just ain't right
I'm a cash-stealing, drug-dealing loser without any feeling
I Get trailer trash drunk every night"

Nick - I'm a 15 year old High School student. I like sports and will be playing Football next year for Columbia.  Come out and see me play!

2. When/why did you first start doing crossfit?

Kevin - This April will be 2 years for me.  I never liked the Gym atmosphere. I was working out just lifting weights in the garage one night looking for different exercises and I came across something called CrossFit. After watching a few videos, I tried some of the GIRL WODS like Fran and Cindy and would then do my workout. After a few months I walked in the door at Beyond.

Nick - I would come and watch my Dad on Monday night and one night Joy asked if I wanted to join in on all the fun.  That was about a year ago.

3. What fitness activities were you doing before?

Kevin - what fitness level was I before... I don't think I had a Level. I just lifted in the garage.

Nick - I lifted during gym at school.

4. What results have you seen since you joined CF?

Kevin - I lowered my CHOLESTEROL and have gotten leaner and stronger.

Nick - I've gotten stronger and gained muscle and lost some weight.

5. What do you like most about CFB?

Kevin - I like the family feel, kind of like a small town feel.

Nick - Competing against my DAD!

6. What is your favorite CF exercise/least favorite?

Kevin - Cleans, Pull ups , Push ups , Box Jumps, and  I don't even mind BURPEES! Least favorite are OHS, Snatches, and anything Over Head.

Nick - I like Back squats, and I  hate OHS.

7. What CF accomplishment are you currently most proud of?

Kevin - I got my first Muscle up the other night and a sub 9min mile and the BIGGEST was walking through the door!

Nick - My 275# dead lift and 235# back squat

8. What CF goal(s) are you working towards? How close are you to reaching them?

Kevin - Snatch (getting under the bar) almost there , double unders (not even close)

Nick - To beat my DAD in every WOD and strength!

9. If you could create a WOD what would it look like?

Kevin - You will have to wait until April ,  just think I'll be 54 born in '64 (sorry not sorry)

Nick - Box Jumps , DB snatches , and maybe a 400m run

"I have found a competitive way to work out with other people and find small improvements and gains to keep me coming back for more! "

This month's Spotlight Athlete is Justin! Justin has been at CrossFit Beyond for almost two years. He has always been into sports and he truly enjoys the challenge, competitiveness, and sense of community at Beyond! He has noticed a lot of improvements with his flexibility and form since joining our gym but his most exciting improvement has been with his golf swing! Check out his story below!

1. Tell us about yourself

I am 30 years old, married and about to have twin boys.  I have lived in the area for 4 years but am originally from eastern Massachusetts.  After my 6 a.m. CF class I stay downtown and go to work as a banker - specifically in commercial lending.

2. When/why did you first start doing crossfit?
I have now been doing CF at CF beyond for over a year and a half.  I joined because I was searching for a platform that would motivate me to stay with working out on a consistent basis.  I would habitually go to the gym or find other ways of working out for 3 month spurts and then become lazy again.

Fortunately, the accountability factor has worked for me where I may miss more days than I should, the competitive nature of the group workouts and the consistency that everyone else brings to the table has helped me to stay engaged for all this time!

3. What fitness activities were you doing before?
I have always been into sports and therefore I learned and focused on lifting throughout my life just as a supplement to my seasonal sports.  Once done with real competition I would have physical activity from random leagues and then various gym stints and I do love hot yoga.  I am terrible at it but I enjoy the combination of the sweat, hard work it takes me and the stretch that I desperately need.

4. What results have you seen since you joined CF?
I have certainly seen improvement in my flexibility since joining CF...still with a long way to go.  Naturally I continue to gain strength and hardly ever have to scale with regards to weight so that is good.  Most importantly, I slowly improve my form in every exercise as I started out with many struggles we cross these off the list as time goes on.  This year I was able to point directly to my Golf Swing as evidence that CF helped my flexibility which made it all worth it.

5. What do you like most about CFB?
The easy answer for what I like most about CFB is the people which leads to the community.  Obviously it is a very welcoming group but the format enables you to become very close with the group that you are typically with, now I feel that way with the 6 a.m. class where it is a great fun group of people to grow close to.

6. What is your favorite CF exercise/least favorite?
I enjoy cleans because they seem to be my most naturally easy exercise and I can continue to improve and go up in weight...everything else tests my flexibility and form so much that they are more stressful.

My lease favorite exercise is Toes2Bar - I cannot get the kip form down for them and it drives me insane.  And snatches...

7. What CF accomplishment are you currently most proud of?
It took me a long time, and still needs work, to consistently get my body in the right position for heavy deadlifting.  If I am not very careful then my back feels it the next day - but my best accomplishment is just feeling like I have this down now without major coaching every time.  It is a long road with me but thank goodness for the patience of coaches.

8. What CF goal(s) are you working towards? How close are you to reaching them?
I am starting to work on muscle ups more often so that is my next goal...I recently got banded bar muscle ups so that is a good sign.  The false grip gets the best of me so we will see.  The good news is, if i get the bar muscle up first then the kip should translate to toes2bar as well and I wont have that issue lingering quite as much!

9. If you could create a word what would it look like?
I like AMRAPs so I know that the end is in sight...so I would probably do a 10 minute AMRAP that involved Cleans, Pull Ups, and Headstand Push Ups; I like when things are challenging but do not have me thinking about form the whole time, stressing out that I might be doing something wrong.

I have a lot of fun and am glad that I have found a competitive way to work out with other people and find small improvements and gains to keep me coming back for more!

"Crossfit has changed my life dramatically and for the absolute best."

This month's Spotlight Athlete is Alexis! Alexis is no stranger to fitness. She was an athlete all throughout high school and college but CrossFit has helped her to achieve some major fitness goals in her life and has created some incredible friendships for her along the way. Check out her story below!

1. Tell us about yourself

I’m 26 - from Plattsburgh and moved to Albany 4.5 years ago to get my Masters in Social Work. Currently working on an initiative that focuses on behavioral health advocacy in the Capital Region.

2. When/why did you first start doing crossfit?
I joined Crossfit Beyond in 2015 thanks to Alyssa convincing me to join! I really joined because in 2014 I attempted completing a full marathon in Memphis for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and failed at mile 19. I was determined to get stronger, have better nutrition and complete the marathon. In 2016 I signed up for the Memphis Marathon again and in December of 2016 I finished the marathon AND met my fundraising goal of $2,500!

3. What fitness activities were you doing before?
Before I joined Crossfit I was running and doing HIIT classes like body pump and body combat. I also ran track in college and in high school I did gymnastics, basketball and track and field.

4. What results have you seen since you joined CF?
Since joining crossfit and with the extreme help of Broccoli Klub, I have been able to see an increase in muscle definition and decrease in body fat. My strength has increased dramatically since I've started. I’ve also been feeling much more confident about myself when I’m able to surprise myself and do movements I never thought I’d be able to do! Crossfit has changed my life dramatically and for the absolute best.

5. What do you like most about CFB?
I love the gymnastics components of crossfit especially being a former gymnast. Anything upside down is my favorite and I also love double unders and wall balls! But my absolute favorite is the friends I’ve made at the gym that have turned into family.

6. What is your favorite CF exercise/least favorite?
The snatch because it’s the most difficult and requires the most technique!

7. What CF accomplishment are you currently most proud of?
I am most proud of being able to get stronger this year and consistently having the strength and skills to complete wods rx and sometimes even rx plus! It’s amazing to continue to get stronger and surprise myself with what I can do.

8. What CF goal(s) are you working towards? How close are you to reaching them?
My goals are currently muscle ups (both bar and ring) as well as working towards strength goals such as a 300lb deadlift. I am 15lbs away from a 300lb deadlift and I have a lot of practice and skill work to go for muscle ups.

9. If you could create a word what would it look like?
My wod would be cardio intense and likely a chipper (multiple movements with high reps :) ) - likely squats/double unders/mountain climbers/sit ups/push ups/pull ups- with some type of a handstand/inverted movement for an after party.
