I've been competing my whole life, but I've never experienced anything quite like a CrossFit competition. First of all, in volleyball, I always knew what was expected of me, I block, I spike, I serve, I pass..Maybe we switch up a rotation depending on how the other team plays, but the basic format never changes. In CrossFit, you don't know what to expect, and when you find out, you have minutes to prepare. You're nervous until you have no choice but to go. The next WOD could contain a movement you dread or something you love, either way you have to do your best. Next, you don't truly know the meaning of "every rep counts" until you finish a mere 4 points from the team in first place. You start recounting your workouts and wishing you had pushed just a little harder, gone for that heavier weight. This makes competing even more addictive! Finally, your competition in other sports is not someone you cheer for, you don't congratulate them when they beat you. In CrossFit, you exchange high-fives and fist bumps, wish them luck, bust your butt during the workout, then when you're done, you turn around and cheer them on.
I think back to the last team to finish the first scaled WOD. The girl could not get past the ground to over-head portion, she had no idea how many eyes were on her until she got the bar up and the entire gym erupted in cheers. Her eyes lit up and she smiled, maybe for the first and last time during that workout, since I don't think they finished under the time cap.
At the end of the day, it was amazing to see that the majority of the top competitors in this competition were from OUR gym! We are surrounded by fantastic people and amazing athletes. Everyone that came out to cheer the CrossFit Beyond athletes on, you rock. Seriously, it's so much more exciting to perform for an audience. I can't wait to do this again!
