It's been awhile but I'm getting us back on track! This week's spotlight athlete is Heather Orth!
When/Why did you first start doing CrossFit? I started CF in January 2011 when a colleague told me about his workouts. I am always looking for the next challenge so CF really interested me. Then once meeting Joy at Siena I was hooked. I make a lot of decisions at home and at work, but when I walk into the box that is my hour. I don't have to think or stress about what my workout is going to be, I just get to shut down my mind, do what Joy tells me to do, get the weights up, and get through the WOD.
What fitness activities were you doing before? I was doing a local morning boot camp, running a lot, taking classes at best fitness and doing p90x. But I get bored with my workouts very easily so I would jump around from one to the next when I needed to switch things up.
What results have you seen since you joined CrossFit Beyond? I have noticed my body responding in a way that I never did with any other workout. With running I would slim down, with p90x I would bulk up, but with crossfit I was able to lose fat in areas I never had been able to before and develop muscles I never knew existed, while seeing the number on the scale go down.
What is your favorite CF exercise? I don't really have a favorite exercise, but I love long, hard cardio WODs. There is just something about finishing one - especially the hero WODs- that gives me an awesome sense of accomplishment and gets me ready to take on whatever the rest of the day is going to throw at me.
Your least favorite? Pull ups and presses. I have a very weak upper body so I need to work on that. But I just dropped down to the blue band only for pull ups so I am slowly but surely getting stronger!
What CF accomplishment are you currently most proud of? I would say that I am most proud of having stuck with CF for two really challenging years. After starting CF in January 2011 I became pregnant in April. Joy really helped me stick with it throughout the pregnancy - to the point where I was actually on my way to the gym on a Saturday morning when my water broke... And more importantly she really encouraged me to get back into the gym after Ty was born when it would have been so easy to just give up. She even took away my biggest and best excuse and told me to bring the baby to the gym. That became even more important when in April 2012 my husband had to live away from home for six months for work. There were so many days when staying home with my son was easier, but Joy made sure that did not happen. And six months after having a baby I was stronger, lighter, healthier and happier with my body that I ever had been. Now with Baby Orth #2 on the way in June I am ready to take on the next set of challenges with CF as possibly the only hour of sanity in my day and I can't wait! I also think its pretty bad ass that my mom does CF too, seeing her progress and throw up weights has been awesome!
