When/Why did you first start doing CrossFit?
I have always been active and participating, organizing and coaching sports has been such an integral part of my life. About a year and a half ago, I was looking to get involved in an activity or class that would help me get into better shape, speed up my metabolism and help to drop a few pounds. I also wanted my daughter Amy to find her previous love of sport and activity and was interested in something we could join together. I found a Groupon for Crossfit Beyond and called to ask what crossfit was all about since I had never heard of it. Joy was so knowledgeable and encouraging so I signed us both up that day! The location was perfect as it was on my way home from work and there are lots of choices for classes. I have been involved ever since!!
What fitness activities were you doing before?
I played all sports in high school, field hockey in college, and club hockey, rec league basketball, softball, volleyball, and golf after college (and pre-kids!). I have been participating in competitive USTA tennis for the past 15 years. I wanted to get faster and stronger to continue to improve my tennis game. Doing CrossFit 3-4 times per week has really helped!
What results have you seen since you joined CrossFit Beyond?
In addition to getting stronger, I have become more conscious of eating more clean. I have found a new love for sweet potatoes! When I first started doing crossfit, I lost about 10 pounds which I have kept off and my clothes do fit differently. I am still trying to work on more muscle definition though.
What do you like most about CF?
I really love the encouraging atmosphere of crossfit. There are people of all ages and levels of fitness and abilities at Crossfit Beyond. I enjoy the fact that most all activities can be scaled so that anyone can feel a sense of accomplishment and success. It also helps in setting goals to improve. I definitely appreciate that each day's workout is different...crossfit is anything but boring! I also like the continued emphasis on proper technique and the safety of the athlete first and foremost.
What is your favorite CF exercise?
My favorite crossfit exercise is probably anything to do with kettlebells... oh, and flipping tires too! I also like back squats. Maybe throw in some box jumps too. I love workouts with a lot of different skills with a lower number of reps.
Your least favorite?
My least favorites would have to be overhead squats and rope climbs...burpees too.
What CF accomplishment are you currently most proud of?
It felt great to be able to jump up on the box without the level of fear I had in the beginning. I was so afraid of banging my shins which are very sensitive from years of being hit with field hockey sticks and balls! I also recently accomplished my first strict pull up :)
What CF goal are you working towards?
I would absolutely love to be able to do an actual handstand push up. I can kip up from a headstand now, but to be able to do it on sheer strength would be so cool!
