This week's Spotlight Athlete is Elsa! Elsa is a morning class attendee. Read on to learn more about Elsa's awesome story!
When/Why did you first start doing CrossFit?When/Why did you first start doing CrossFit?
I first tried CrossFit through an ARC Rowing/CrossFit Beyond joint program. I had been looking for something new to try and I've never had my ass kicked so hard. I officially started a few months later, in August 2013.
What fitness activities were you doing before?
I had been a competitive rower in high school and college, but stopped when it interfered with my schoolwork. I tried going to the gym on my own, but the elliptical blows. I finally got back on the river in 2012 and after a year I was looking for new challenge.
What results have you seen since you joined CrossFit Beyond?
Deadlifts are my one of my favorite movements and I really enjoy comparing the weight that I'm lifting to people in my life. It was fun to progress from deadlifting my (skinny) sister, to myself, to my boyfriend. Now I can dead lift my boyfriend, for reps.
What do you like most about CrossFit Beyond?
I love that all I have to do is show up. Joy has such excellent programming. Even though I don't come everyday or on a set schedule, I still end up with all-around balanced workouts.
I also love the balance between 1-hour classes and weight lifting (I think this is how CrossFit has such an even gender ratio). I know I'll be done in 1-hour, and I know I'll have done some sort of serious weights.
What is your favorite CF exercise?
There are so many! I enjoy executing proper technique for any movement and lifting heavy weights is just so satisfying. I really love deadlifts, cleans, and snatches. Also rowing will always be my first sport.
However, the biggest surprise is that I have come to love box jumps. When Joy sent around [this box jump video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lE_z2wvC4oI) my love affair started. Working on box jumps is never easy (my shins show proof of that), but this technique certainly changes things up. I'm slowly working my way to being able to do this technique during a WOD on a 24" box.
Your least favorite?
I would say burpees, but I refuse to give them the satisfaction.
Running has always been my least favorite form of exercise. However, I do enjoy that we do so much of it during the spring and summer time. I never really focused on it during a WOD other than to just do it (aka not walking). As such, I was pleasantly surprised when I was able to PR during a mile run for a WOD!
What CF accomplishment are you currently most proud of?
I am most proud of working out at 7 am multiple times a week. Logically, the morning classes work best with my schedule and work habits, but I am not a morning person. Keeping myself in the habit of a 6:30 wakeup is not easy, especially during the dark winter. However, getting the hardest part of my day done first thing really makes everything else that much more enjoyable.
Also, did I mention I can probably deadlift you?
What CF goal are you working towards?
I need to focus on arm/shoulder strength. I want to do a real handstand (facing away from the wall) and a pull-up. I've had some shoulder trouble in the past, so I want to make sure I strengthen evenly and in a healthy way.
Also, some day I'll be able to bench press my body weight, I just need to loose 70 pounds.
