What is the CrossFit Open?

The Open is the first stage of the Games season. This five-week, five-workout competition is held in CrossFit affiliates and garage gyms around the world. Workouts are released online each Thursday, and athletes have until the following Monday to submit their scores. Anyone who's at least 14 years old can sign up. It's a fun and competitive way to WOD with CrossFitters all over the world! The 2018 Open is taking place from February 22nd - March 26th.

Why Do we encourage members to take the judge's course?

With the CrossFit Open right around the corner, it is strongly encourage that members consider taking the online judges course! Even if you don't decide to judge in an upcoming competition or judge an athlete who is registered for the Open at CrossFit Beyond, the course  itself will at least help you to be a better athlete. It will help you to think about form and technique. Being self aware of your own form and technique is a valuable skill to have as a CrossFit athlete, so if for no other reason but that, members should really take the course.

The course takes you through the basics of being a good judge. After each module, there are a series of written and multiple choice questions, filmed scenarios and freeze-frame judgment calls that will challenge and support your ability to judge human movement in real time. The course is not easy, but should benefit all potential competition judges and even anyone interested in the subtleties of human movement and performance.

**Take notes and record your answers on a piece of paper. If you miss one question you will have to start over.  Having the answers that you have already answered correctly  written down, will get you back to the spot where you left off much faster!!!

The cost for the course is only $10.

The course could take 2+ hours to complete so make sure you do it when you have a good chunk of time available.

The course is mandatory for anyone who plans to judge at Regionals. It is also required for Affiliate Managers who will be validating scores during the Open.

The intent of the course is to set expectations for judging athletes during competition and to review common movement standards. The course will also have revised scenarios where you will watch short segments of a workout and be asked to provide the correct score.

If you plan on doing your Open workouts at an affiliate, you are encouraged to use a registered judge, but it is not required for most participants.

“I feel the strongest I have ever been, both physically and mentally.”

Lauren

"I feel the strongest I have ever been, both physically and mentally."

This month's Spotlight Athlete is Lauren! Lauren has been at CrossFit Beyond for just over two years. She initially decided to join after her dad- long time member, and coach -Mark, finally convinced her to give CrossFit a try! She has been hooked ever since! Check out her story below!

1. Tell us about yourself.

I am originally from the Albany area, went to Penn State for my undergrad, and returned back to the Albany area to attend graduate school. I currently work at Albany Medical Center in the Neurosciences-Stroke Department.

2.When/Why did you first start doing CrossFit?

I started CrossFit in November 2015 after my Dad (Mark), finally convinced me to go to the on-ramp and try it for a month. Needless to say I haven't looked back! At that point in my life, I was having a difficult time prioritizing my fitness routine and wanted to try something different. CrossFit had the structured programming that I had been missing.

3.What fitness activities were you doing before?

Hot Yoga, Barre and Running.

4.What results have you seen since you joined CF?

I feel the strongest I have ever been, both physically and mentally. I feel my overall fitness has improved and it has been honestly one of the best stress relievers after a busy day.

5.What do you like most about CrossFit Beyond?

I love the variety of programming and just as important, I love the community aspect of the gym--CrossFit Beyond is my second family.

6.What is your favorite CF exercise? /Your least favorite?

My favorite would be power cleans! Least favorite back/front squats.

7.What CF accomplishment are you currently most proud of?

Right now I would say I am proud of finally reaching a 200 lb deadlift. After being stuck at a plateau for a while, I was pumped to hit 200 lbs for 3 reps.

8.What CF goal(s) are you working towards? How close are you to reaching them?

Right now I am working towards performing more WODs Rx--slowly, but surely I am getting there. This past summer I started working with the Broccoli Klub to dial in on the nutrition aspect of my performance. I continue to see progress with my endurance and strength because of this, and can't wait to see what 2018 brings!

9.If you could create a WOD what would it look like?

Definitely something with power cleans, pull ups, and rowing!

CrossFit Beyond Open Workouts Information

The CrossFit Opens officially begin on February 22nd and go until March 26th. We will be doing the workouts each Friday. The workouts are released online each Thursday. There will be a lot of fun and excitement happening in those 5 weeks so don't miss out! Whether you signed up to participate online, or for our in-house competition, or both, or you simply just want to try it out for fun! Join us on Fridays!

If you registered online through crossfit.com to participate in the opens you must be judged by one of our members who has taken the judges course and you must submit your scores online by 8pm on the Monday following the release of each workout.

CrossFit Beyond Intramural- In House Competition

We are also holding an Intramural Team In House Competition, and while it is recommended that you have signed up for the open online, it is not required to participate in our in-house competition. The details for this in house competition are below. It's a lot of fun!

The Intramural Opens is a "in-house competition" during the opens.
Basically you and your team (total of 3) will do the open workouts each week and earn points. Now the competition part is determined by how you do in the workout and when you workout.

There are 4 categories to which you can earn points:

1pt-Doing the Workout

2pts- Doing the Workout Along with your team (at least 2 of the 3 must be present, this doesn't mean you have to be working out, another member could simply be cheering the others on)

3pts-Having a member who is in the top three for scaled in the gym (Men and Women)

4pts-Having a member who is in the top 3 for RX in the gym (Men and Women). So the Max number of points a team can earn each week is 9 points (everyone did the WOD, everyone did it together, and all three were in either top scaled and/or top RX).

Each team can pick a team name and can earn 2 additional points by wearing a team uniform (shirts, costumes, color schemes etc) while working out together (these 2 points can only be earned once not weekly).
Each week we will post the standings. The winning team wins a bunch of prizes!

Sign up on the Whiteboard if you would like to participate!  Let us know if you will be participating as an Rx or Scaled athlete. We will be randomly selecting teams with a mix of scaled and Rx. You must sign up by this Friday Feb. 9th in order to participate.
