Working together to combat childhood cancers

Battle to Beat Cancer WOD with annual head-shaving event

Continuing its strong tradition of raising awareness and research dollars for a great cause, and having a fun time doing it with area athletes and friends, Crossfit Beyond is hosting the St. Baldrick’s WOD, followed by a head-shaving event next door at the Barrel Saloon.

“We are very excited to join the Melodies Center at Albany Medical Center, family, friends, members from our box and other Crossfit boxes to come together to honor these amazing children who have been unfortunately affected by this horrible disease,” said Matt Hickling, trainer at Crossfit Beyond, Clinic Registered Nurse in the Melodies Center and event organizer.  “We want to bring as much awareness as we can by hosting events like this because cancer research for children and young adults is severely underfunded.”

This Sunday, March 16, Crossfit Beyond is joining forces with Albany Medical Center’s Melodies Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders in a fundraising effort to combat childhood cancer.  The day starts with the “Battle to Beat Cancer” WOD (workout of the day) at 11 a.m. at Crossfit Beyond; those who wish to do battle are asked to consider making a donation, but it is not required.  Following the WOD, the Melodies Center will be hosting the annual St. Baldrick’s head-shaving event at the Barrel Saloon.  Those “shavees” have solicited individual donations and will be shaving their heads as a show of support and to give strength to children fighting cancer. Ten percent of sales at the Barrel Saloon will go to St. Baldrick’s.  Cean Olsen, from Albany Crossfit, will be selling T-shirts from his company, Lift for Meat; 25 percent of the sales will be donated to St. Baldrick’s.

Crossfit Beyond believes in a strong sense of community and this event marks another in a series of efforts to raise vital dollars for research, increase awareness to important causes, and get members and friends involved.  Earlier this year, it hosted a Charity WOD to raise funds in honor of Rare Disease Day.  In October of last year, Crossfit Beyond hosted Barbells for Boobs to raise funds to help people pay for breast cancer detection services.  And last February, it hosted Crossfit Love to raise funds for a fellow member who ran in the Dana Farber Marathon Challenge in honor of her friend who was lost to cancer.

St. Baldrick’s has been raising dollars since 2000 to fund research into finding cures for childhood cancers.  It is a volunteer-driven charity that gets communities involved around the country through head-shaving events.  In 2013, it raised over $34 million and included over 58,000 shavees.  This year, it is on track to raise even more.

Registration begins at 10 a.m. on Sunday, March 16, at Crossfit Beyond, located at 952 Broadway, Albany. For more information, please call Crossfit Beyond owner Joy Smolinski at 810-5794 or email event organizer Matt Hickling at  All participating athletes are asked to email Matt as well.  You can also find Crossfit Beyond on Facebook, or at
