This week's Spotlight Athlete is Jane! Jane is typically a 6:00pm class attendee, and you will also find her as a regular during the weekend classes. Read on to learn about Jane's story of success with CrossFit, and how she has continued to incorporate modified CrossFit workouts during her pregnancy.
When/Why did you first start doing CrossFit?
I started doing Crossfit in January of 2014 because I wanted to get in shape for my wedding, and also because I had been getting bored with my gym routine and wanted to try something new. The first time I showed up to a 6 AM class, we had to run 800 meters outside to warm up. It was in the middle of January, pretty damn cold out, and I thought “what have I gotten myself into?” However, I was hooked after that first class and have been going ever since.
What fitness activities were you doing before?
I had been taking spin classes, interval training, and using the elliptical. I’d walk around the gym using the machines with no real direction. I had also been taking yoga and barre classes, which I still love to do.
What results have you seen since you joined CrossFit Beyond?
Up until this past December, when I found out I was pregnant, I had definitely noticed a change in how my clothes fit. Though the scale didn't reflect a huge loss, I was definitely losing inches, which is what counts! But most importantly, I feel healthier I than ever have, definitely more so than when I was in my 20s. I have gotten a lot stronger and noticed an improvement in endurance, which is really cool because I am quite literally the least athletic person on the planet.
What do you like most about CrossFit Beyond?
I love showing up and not having to think-just look at the white board! The workouts are constantly changing and I am never bored. Also, I've been able to keep up with the workouts throughout my pregnancy (with some modifications of course) and it's done wonders for me. The few times I didn’t feel totally run down during my first trimester were when I was working out! Also, my husband joined CFB shortly after I did, and I love having another activity that we can do together. Finally, I can’t say enough about the people at CFB. Everyone is really nice and supportive. Working out with such a fun group of people is definitely a great motivator.
What is your favorite CF exercise?
I love cleans, deadlifts, and most of the Olympic lifts, actually. I think I am finally getting the hang of snatches, which I initially struggled with. I also love kettlebell swings and ball slams.
Your least favorite?
Wall balls. Every time I see them on the white board, I die a little on the inside. I also really dislike running-I may be the slowest runner at CFB. If there is running in the WOD, you can pretty much guarantee that I will finish dead last.
What CF accomplishment are you currently most proud of?
I’m proud of the gains I have made with my lifts, and though I am on a heavy lifting hiatus for the next few months, I am confident that I can get back to where I was and will continue to get stronger.
What CF goal are you working towards?
My number one goal right now is to get off the bands and be able to do unassisted pull ups. Also, double unders, even though I am fairly certain that I am missing the double under gene and will never be able to do them. But I’ll keep trying!
