What’s Your CrossFit Story?

greatI started doing CrossFit last July. For the past week or so, I have been comparing my fitness abilities from a year ago to now, reflecting on how much stronger I've become, and thinking about why and how I got involved in doing CrossFit. This also made me realize that everyone has a CrossFit story to tell. How did you first hear about CrossFit and what made you crazy enough to give it a try?! I would love to make this an open thread, where I can re-post stories from this blog and from the Facebook page that CrossFitters choose to share. Up until last July, I lived for running.I had been running since I was in high school. I ran a marathon, I ran half-marathons, I ran everyday, sometimes twice a day, and I ran a decent 7 minute mile pace. I loved everything about running. A few years ago, I started having pain in my right foot and a bone scan determined that I had a hairline fracture. I continued to run through the pain, until I ended up with a full blown stress fracture and I had to take a serious break from running. I was devastated! I was starting to become frustrated and not love running the way that I used to. After a few months (which felt like a few years) of no running, my fracture was healing. My foot doctor told me that if I wanted to continue running I would need custom orthotics made for my feet, and I would need to incorporate strength training into my workouts in order to strengthen my whole body. I didn't know anything about weights, or strength conditioning, and I didn't know what I was going to do...

Meanwhile, as all of this was going on, my best friend Jenifer's fiance, John had just returned to the United States from Iraq. John was a Sargent with the U.S. Marine Corps. He was introduced to CrossFit while he was in Iraq, and he decided to open up a Box in Utica, NY when he returned home. John originally started running classes out of the garage at his house. I attended a few classes and I thought they were fun and different. Eventually he opened a box (CrossFit Mohawk Valley) in an actual building and he and Jen have been there for almost two years.

After seeing how strong Jen had become from doing CrossFit, I began to constantly ask her a ton of questions about it. I was terrified to try anything except for running. I was comfortable with running and I was very reluctant to try something new. Knowing about my foot situation, Jen finally convinced me to join a Box in Albany. I am now hooked! I still run, but not nearly as much as I used to, but I'm okay with it and my body is too!
