Everything you might be wondering
I'm terrified I won't be able to do the workouts. What if I'm too out of shape to start?
A: You are not supposed to be able to do the "Rx" (prescribed) workouts. CrossFit is designed to be scaled to your current fitness level. The coach will show you an individualized version of every movement, PVC pipes instead of barbells, box step-ups instead of jumps, etc. Your only job is to accept the easiest option offered. Your Action Item: Arrive 5 minutes early to your first class. Locate the coach and let them know you need the most basic scaling for every movement. Remind yourself out loud in the car: "My only goal today is learning, not lifting heavy."
I feel super awkward. I don't know anyone, and I don't want to look stupid.
A: Every single person in that gym remembers their first day, they were terrified too. CrossFit runs on a specific social script: warm-up, workout, cool-down, share praise and good vibes. You do not need to make conversation or introduce yourself. Just follow the flow of the class. Humans are social creatures; once you start recognizing faces, skipping a day feels like letting them down. Your Action Item: At the end of the WOD, simply extend your fist toward the person nearest you for a bump or to exchange a harmless "nice work!", then move on to putting your equipment away. Do this at the end of every class for your first 3 visits. That single gesture is enough to make you a recognizable face without requiring any small talk.
How do I know if I'm "doing well" or making progress?
A: For your first 6 weeks, you are strictly forbidden from judging your performance by weight or speed. Your only metric is attendance frequency. Did you check in 3 times this week? Then you succeeded, period. Do not look at the leaderboard or compare your score to anyone else's. Your Action Item: Buy a cheap physical calendar or use a whiteboard marker on your bathroom mirror. Put a giant red "X" on every day you attend class. Your only daily goal is to avoid breaking the chain of X's. Ignore the whiteboard leaderboard entirely for the first month.
What if I miss my class? Should I just wait until next Monday to start fresh?
A: Absolutely not. "Starting fresh next week" is the #1 habit-killer. If you miss a scheduled day, you must re-book for the very next available day, even if that day isn't part of your usual routine. One missed day is a bump; two missed days in a row is a spiral. Your Action Item: Adopt the "Never Miss Two" rule as a strict personal policy. If you skip a class, open your app immediately and book the next day's class before you do anything else. Do not wait for your "normal" schedule to roll back around.
I'm so sore from my first class that I can barely walk. How can I possibly go back tomorrow?
A: Do not skip. Soreness is not an injury, it's just inflammation. On brutally sore days, implement the "Show Up and Warm Up" rule. Drive to the gym, change, and complete the 10-minute coach-led warm-up and mobility. After the warm-up, assess how you feel. If you are still in agony, you have permission to do active recovery (light rowing or PVC work) while the class does the WOD. 90% of the time, the warm-up will loosen you up enough to finish the class. Your Action Item: Write a personal rule in your phone's notes: "If I'm sore, I will still put on my shoes and drive there. I am allowed to just do the warm-up and leave."
